We provide an opportunity for black librarians to exchange and share ideas, collaborate on library-related projects, promote professional development activities, sponsor scholarship initiatives, serve as a network for the sharing of information between librarians and para-professionals throughout the State of Indiana, and to establish channels of communication between black librarians and para-professionals statewide.
Nichelle M. Hayes MPA, MLS is the leader of the Center for Black Literature & Culture (CBLC), Indianapolis Public Library. Hayes graduated from Indiana University – School of Library & Information Science (SLIS) with her MLS. She began her library career as a Library Media Specialist at an Elementary School in Indianapolis. Later she worked as an Adult Reference Librarian Specializing in Business. She serves on a number of community boards throughout the state of Indiana. A few are the NAACP, Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. A Public Service Organization (Lifetime Member PIF). She is a blogger at https://thetiesthatbind.blog/ where she discusses genealogy and keeping families connected. Nichelle serves as IBLN President and a mentor to many black librarians.
Stephen Lane is the Special Collections Librarian for the Indianapolis Public Library. Lane graduated from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) with a Master’s in History as well as his MLS. He began his library career at the Indianapolis Public Library as an Activity Guide, focusing on bringing new technology and a love of learning to children. He has worked as archivist for Butler University as well as a Research Assistant for IUPUI’s School of Informatics and Computing. Lane also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 2010 – 2013. Stephen currently serves IBLN as Treasurer.
Kiersten Weaver is the Teen Programming Specialist for the Indianapolis Public Library. Weaver obtained her MLS from IUPUI in 2010 while working for the Allen County Public Library. Weaver also worked for the Frankfort Community Library as a Teen Services Librarian. She is an avid knitter, crocheter and dungeon master. She serves IBLN as our Membership Coordinator.
